Are you dreading the cold of the northern hemisphere this winter? You might need a vacation somewhere down south. Way south.
In case you’ve forgotten, the seasons in Oz are opposite of those on the other side of the equator. So, if you’re looking to escape the cold in search of something a little warmer, then I’ve got just the country for you. The Land Down Under is perfect this time of year.
Here are a few regions you should include on your itinerary this winter in Australia.
New South Wales is home to one of the most popular cities, Sydney, which happens to have wonderful temperatures during the winter. If you don’t like the sweltering heat but you’re not a fan of the cold either, it’s a good choice. There is a wide range of hotels here, which means that finding accommodation in Sydney will be a breeze.
Melbourne is not only one of the best cities in the country, but it’s got an Amazing beach, which is just the thing you’ll need in December.
Visit the Peninsula Hot Springs, or spend the afternoon sipping on the world’s best coffee, which Melbourne is known for. Get a table at Milk the Cow for some wine and artisan cheeses. If you’re missing the winter you know and love, plan a snowy weekend at Mount Baw Baw, an all-season ski resort that’s open all year round—you don’t find that everywhere.
3. Alice Springs
If you want to get out of the city and into the wilderness, Alice Springs is the jump off point for the Australian Outback. Though the climate in any desert can be extreme and the temperatures can always vary, you’re bound to see more abundant wildlife at this time of year. There are a few things out here you definitely don’t want to miss, so be sure to give yourself enough time. Visit Ayers Rock (Uluru), Alice Springs Desert Park, or hike the Larapinta Trail.
Why not get off the mainland this winter and take a trip to Tasmania? There’s no shortage of things to do here, from visiting the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, to hiking Cradle Mountain.Be sure to visit the Bay of Fires, as seen above, which provides some of the most opulent
Be sure to visit the Bay of Fires, as seen above, which provides some of the most opulent coastline in the country. There are small sleepy towns dotted all over the island, which makes it the perfect getaway if you’re after something a little bit more on the relaxed side. You also won’t want to miss an opportunity to learn how to make gin at the William McHenry and Sons Distillery.
Australia is incredible all year round, but winter is definitely best spent down under.
