Whether it be the Iceland ice cave tours, the gorgeous scenery, the people, or the cuisine, this country is no doubt an exciting place. While the menu in Iceland might not suit everyone’s palate, we recommend giving the unique dishes at least one try before writing them off completely.

Maybe some of the food here is a little strange, but if you’re feeling adventurous, these are the best places to give the cultural side of Iceland a go.

Bizarre Restaurants in Iceland

Hildebranur Farm

It’s not quite a restaurant, but Hildebranur Farm, or the “Shark Museum,” as it’s sometimes referred to, is the best place to try Hakarl, which is rotten shark. The farm is owned by Hildibrandur Bjarnason and his family, who have been catching this prehistoric Nordic shark for generations. The shark is a delicacy in Iceland, and they supply most of it nationwide. Just be prepared: it tastes a lot better than it smells.

Grillmarkadurinn

Grillmarkadurinn is a great place to start if you know you want to try something bizarre, but you’re not quite ready to dive right into it. The restaurant has an extensive menu which puts a creative spin on both traditional and international dishes. Therefore, when you order the puffin (yes, that cute penguin), whale, or reindeer, the taste will be accompanied by some others that are more familiar.

Fjott og Gott

This place might be located inside a bus terminal (BSI), but that’s all the more reason to check it out. It’s a mom-and-pop kind of shop, but make no mistake–this little place has a lot to dish out, especially if you admire the traditional cuisines of a country. It might be small, but Fjott og Gott serves a giant sheep’s head, known as svio, for a low price.

Kopar

Gellur, or cod tongue, is another strange food that you’ll find over here at Kopar. Since cod don’t actually have tongues, you’ll be eating a boiled part of the mouth that’s actually quite good. The food could be equated to brussel sprouts in the States–always found at the table, but usually ignored (until the taste buds develop, at least). However, this restaurant serves it up deliciously, with garlic, sherry cream, and cheese. You might just like it!

3 Frakkar

If you’re down to try all the bizarre foods that Iceland offers, then 3 Frakkar is the place to go. This restaurant, like Hildrenbranur Farm, has been run by the same family since the 80’s, and prides itself on serving traditional fare, including, but not limited to, whale, reindeer, puffin, horse, and seabird. No worries, the chefs give the foods a tasty touch, so you won’t even realize what you’re eating. Unless of course, you want to.

Baejarins Beztu Pylsur

Every person who has ever been to Iceland knows this restaurant. Famous for their lamb hot dogs, (that’s right, we said lamb hot dogs), this street stand has been recognized by travel and food critics far and wide, and they always get rated the highest. Lamb dogs might sound bizarre, but not here. Don’t miss it!
