Our Favorite Travel Clothes and Accessories: Spring 2019

Our team is made up of expert travelers who know good gear when they come across it. Every quarter we’ll be releasing a list of our favorite travel clothes and accessories of the season—and that’s what this is!

We’ve been not-so-patiently waiting for spring to arrive… and it’s finally here! So we’ve compiled some of the best travel clothes, accessories, gadgets and gear of the season.

Trust us—we’ve been those people at the airport with broken backpacks spilling out all of our clothes. Just like we’ve been those people caught in the rain, stuffing our electronics under our shirts to protect them. And we’ve had our fair share of lost and stolen stuff, wishing we’d put trackers on things.

The team here at TravelFreak has handpicked and battle-tested each product on this season’s list, so you know everything is legit. It’s a bunch of stuff that, sure, you might not think you need—but that we sure as hell wish we’d always had.

Our Favorite Travel Clothes

Here are some our favorite travel clothes of the season.

Bluffworks Threshold Travel T-Shirt (Men’s)

Bluffworks Threshold Travel T-Shirt (Men’s)
The Bluffworks Threshold Travel T-Shirt is a technical travel t-shirt made by travelers for travelers, which is what lands it on this list of the best travel clothes. Whether you’re traveling to the other side of the world or the grocery store down the street, Bluffworks has worked hard over the past two years to create the best travel tee on the market.
Made from a polyester blend with Lyocell and Elastane for stretch, the Threshold is a moisture-wicking, quick-dry T-shirt that is odor-proof and wrinkle-free. It also offers UPF 50+ sun protection and, unlike some other travel shirts in this category, we love it because it’s surprisingly comfortable to wear.

01algo Performance shirts by Stitch Fix (Unisex)

01.algo Stitch Fix various clothing items
By mailing curated and hand-selected clothes right to your door, Stitch Fix has revolutionized (and thankfully simplified) the world of online shopping.

Not only will Stitch Fix hook you up with stylish clothes for your next trip, but they can also send you performance-minded, technical gear if you’re planning to go hiking or trekking. They recently released their own line of performance gear called 01algo and—breaking news, guys—it’s actually really good. We’ve tried a couple of their long-sleeve performance shirts, and they do a great job of regulating body temperature without holding any unnecessary moisture.

Whether you’re hitting the beach or planning a trek in the mountains, just let your personal Stitch Fix stylist know your travel plans. They’ll send you a selection of their best travel clothes for your trip.

Arc’teryx Zeta SL Rain Jacket (Men’s and Women’s)

At TravelFreak, we’re strong believers in buying gear for life. Arc’teryx is a brand we know well and love. It’s not the cheapest brand on the market, but quality gear isn’t supposed to be. And for good reason.

One thing Arc’teryx excels at is creating rain gear that is both waterproof and breathable at the same time (sounds crazy, doesn’t it?). That’s precisely what lands it in this list of the best travel clothes. Their SL line, which stands for “super light,” is perfect for travel. The Zeta SL rain jacket , in particular, is incredibly durable, but it also rolls up into a tiny package that hardly takes up any space in your bag.

It’s made from GORE-TEX, and the WaterTight zippers and adjustable cuffs seal out any liquids or rain. This is, in our humble opinion, one of the best rain jackets for travel on the market today (and we’ve tried more than a few!).

SHOP MEN’S SHOP WOMEN’S

Vessi Travel Shoes (Men’s and Women’s)

Vessi Travel Shoes
Maybe shoes don’t perfectly fall under the best travel clothes category, but they are a necessary part of every outfit. And, as they have for us, the Vessi travel shoes will quickly become one of your favorite pairs of sneakers. Not only are they stylish, but they’re also functional.

They’re lightweight, made of vegan materials and are both breathable and waterproof at the same time. Even though they’re a knit mesh, you can literally jump in puddles and keep your feet dry. We’ve worn them in all sorts of environments, and we have no complaints about damp toes.

What’s more, they’re incredibly comfortable, and if you need to pack them away, they’re easily collapsable. Sneakers used to take up the most space in my bag, but now they’re one of the smallest items I pack.

Kenny Flowers Swim Trunks (Men’s)

Model lounges on inflatable watermelon wearing Kenny Flowers swim trunks
These swim trunks from Kenny Flowers come in a variety of wild colors and patterns, like cheetah print and tropical florals. Men’s swim apparel is mostly all the same these days, so if you’ve got a wild side and want to show it off, look no further.
Maybe you go for the llamas or toucans, or maybe you just go for a pineapple print. You can’t go wrong with these bold board shorts. Whatever the case, these aren’t just bathing suits. They’re a symbol of your lifestyle.

Kenny Flowers is an IBM consultant-turned-designer, but says his story isn’t “one of those tired ‘boy-quits-his-corporate-gig-to-travel-then-find-his-spirit-hawk-only-to-come-back-and-sell-you-lotion’ stories.” Rather, he simply realized that, whatever you’re pursuing in life, “it’s not that tough to enjoy yourself along the way.” We love that.

Aritzia Knit Tops (Women’s)

Who says you have to sacrifice fashion for functionality? Aritizia’s knit tops are some of the best clothes for travel since they’re comfortable and can easily be dressed up or down under different layers. They’re essential for the stylish traveler.

But besides looking (and feeling) like a hundred bucks, you can rest assured that these knit tops are wrinkle-free and machine washable. Plus they roll up super small and don’t take up any room at all. You’ll want to pack more than one for your next trip, as they come in a vast array of colors. If you’re anthing like us, you might start hoarding these tops.

Bombas Ankle Socks (Men’s and Women’s)

The struggle to find a pair of comfortable socks is real — we hate those socks that always seem to twist on your feet, or that have zero cushion. Plus, if they’re worn for a long time, most socks start to cause blisters, slide down your feet, or just get plain stinky. But not Bombas. These ankle socks are engineered to be the most comfortable socks ever.

Unlike other socks, Bombas are sewn with a Y-stitched heel, which means there’s no annoying seam that hits your toes. And they have soft, blister tabs that keep your socks in place while also preventing chafing. Best of all, Bombas donates one pair of socks to someone in need for every pair that’s purchased.

Our Favorite Travel Accessories

Beyond the best travel clothes, here are some of our favorite travel accessories of the season.

Zoppen Travel Wallet

A good travel wallet is key to staying organized on the road. And we found that the Zoppen Travel Wallet has more than enough pockets, slots and sleeves to stash everything you could possibly need on your trip.

Besides holding the bare necessities like credit cards and money, this wallet can also store your passport, travel documents, and even your smartphone. And the RFID blocking shield adds an additional layer of protection to give you peace of mind. We worry about thieves on the road, too, of course. But with one of these wallets, thieves feel a lot less intimidating.

Eagle Creek Compression Packing Cubes

We know that trying to squish your precious belongings into a suitcase can be, to say it nicely, a living nightmare. But thankfully, packing with Eagle Creek Compression Packing Cubes can make fitting into those tight spaces a whole lot easier.

They stack neatly inside your bag, but they also keep your toiletries, undies, and everything else organized. And unlike traditional packing cubes, the built-in zippered compression system can save you even more space. Once it’s deflated, you can reduce the size of your clothes by up to 80 percent. That’s saved us tons of dollars on checked luggage fees by being able to squeeze all of our things into carry-on bags, too!

Tep Wireless International Hotspot

We’re always traveling and always need to be connected, which means a portable hotspot is almost essential. While it’s easy enough to find WiFi more often than not, sometimes a hotel (or country!) surprises you with really poor connectivity. So we travel with Tep Wireless as a backup so we never get stranded in a foreign country without internet again.

With a Tep Wireless International Hotspot, you have unlimited WiFi at your fingertips at all times. This pocket-sized device works in over 100 different countries, so you can get directions, check emails and even text your friends from wherever you are in the world.

In addition, you can also connect multiple devices like tablets and laptops simultaneously. Co-working for the win!

Tile Bluetooth Tracker

Let’s face it, losing important and expensive valuables can happen to the best of us. Thankfully, when it does, there’s Tile . Tile is a small Bluetooth tracker that connects to your smartphone so you can locate all your belongings in just a matter of seconds. Attach one to your keys or slide one inside your wallet or luggage. You’ll never lose your valuables again.

(Or rather, you might lose them, but at least you’ll be able to find them.)

Best of all, Tile uses crowdsourcing to geo-locate your stuff, so you don’t have to be physically near your lost keys or wallet to find it. If someone else with a Tile comes in range of your lost item, you’ll be automatically updated with its location—even if you’re on the other side of the world (but let’s hope not).

Now, how cool is that?

NOMAD Slim Leather Wallet

Not only are bulky wallets uncomfortable to use, but they’re also an eyesore to look at. Enter: the NOMAD Slim Wallet. It can carry up to a dozen cards and store cash while still maintaining a slim, minimalistic profile.

But wait, there’s more! NOMAD makes two versions of this wallet—the standard slim leather wallet and a trackable wallet with a built-in Tile (see above). If you leave your wallet in a cab or it gets stolen on a train, you can easily track it down at the touch of a button. It essentially comes with its own built-in security system.

Furthermore, the craftsmanship of the wallet is outstanding. It’s made with soft, genuine Horween leather that ages into a patina over time. Functionality has never looked this good.

LifeStraw Go Filtered Water Bottle

Even drinking just one sip of contaminated water could land you in the hospital. That’s why you should always travel with a water filter—and our favorite is the LifeStraw Go water bottle. It’s reusable, refillable and filters out 99.99 percent of harmful bacteria, sediments, and parasites from any water source.

With LifeStraw Go, you’ll always have access to safe, drinkable water whether you’re hiking in the mountains or traveling to a developing country. (You’re not alone if you’ve gotten sick from drinking tap water anywhere new, either.) And since you aren’t wasting tons of individual plastic bottles, you’re actually doing a big part to help save the environment!

Cabeau S3 Evolution Neck Pillow

We’ve never used a neck pillow this good. It was a random, last-minute purchase at an airport, and one of the best we’ve made this season! This ultra-comfy Cabeau S3 Evolution neck pillow is a responsive memory foam that keeps your head held up high, quite literally! That means no more stiff cricks in your neck when you wake up.

What’s more, it rolls into a compact bag so you can take it with you wherever you go. And when it’s time to sleep, you can easily strap it to the headrest of your seat. With a neck pillow this soft, you’ll have no problem catching some Z’s on your next flight or road trip.

Our Favorite Travel Gear

Even the best travel clothes and accessories aren’t enough to turn a newbie traveler into an expert, however. A true traveler (if not already, soon to be, you) carries this tried-and-true travel gear, too.

Boundary Supply Prima w/ MK-1 Case

The Boundary Supply Prima Backpack is one of the most versatile bags out there. But what really sets it apart from other travel backpacks is its unique, modular design. By attaching and removing various components, this bag provides the ultimate in organization.

The main body of the Prima Pack comes with two modular components—the camera case and the Fieldspace detachable travel sleeve. The Prima offers side access to your camera, and you can easily remove the camera case and turn it into an expandable sling bag for hikes and daily use.

Meanwhile, the Fieldspace detachable travel sleeve is a slim organizer that holds your tablet, pens and other documents. And it can be carried on its own or inserted and carried inside the Prima Pack.

Boundary Supply also recently released the MK-1 case—an add-on module for photographers. If you have a lot of camera gear to carry, and you want to turn your Prima into a legit camera backpack, the MK-1 does exactly that. While there isn’t much room for extra daily necessities, it does carry a lot of gear. We’ve been able to fit:

  • Sony a7iii body
  • DJI Mavic Pro w/ Controller
  • Sony 24-70 f2.8 GM
  • 4TB External Hard Drive
  • Sony 70-200 f2.8GM
  • Extra cables, memory cards, etc.
  • Sony 16-35 f2.8GM

That is a lot of gear to carry in one pack, and the MK-1 does it effortlessly. Plus, with the Prima’s easy top, front and side access, you’ll be able to easily grab your gear.

The best part? If you just want a backpack and don’t want to carry all that camera gear, just remove the MK-1.

Arc’teryx Brize 32L Hiking Pack

Hiking with the right backpack could easily make or break your trip. You need something durable and sturdy, but also comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. That’s where the Arc’teryx Brize 32L Hiking Pack  comes in.

In particular, we love that you can use it for both day hikes and extended trips. It’s roomy enough to hold a sleeping bag but light enough to wear all weekend.

But besides mastering the basics, Arc’teryx has comfort figured down to a science. The pack is Aeroform, an ergonomic material that sits comfortably on your back and provides sufficient airflow to your body.

Pakt One Carry-On

The Pakt One is not your average, run-of-the-mill carry-on bag. While it may look like just a normal duffel bag on the outside, it actually unzips to lay flat like a suitcase! That means you can keep your belongings organized while still having the portability of a duffel. And it can hold up to 35 liters while still complying with airline carry-on requirements.

As an added bonus, the Pakt One comes with a built-in laptop sleeve and laundry bag! But most importantly, it only clocks in at 3.5 pounds, which means you can pack even more of best travel clothes without worrying about that pesky airline weight limit.

Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL Backpacking Tent

Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL
Choosing the right backpacking tent is one of the most important decisions on your camping or hiking trip. But the Copper Spur HV UL Backpacking Tent from Big Agnes ticks all the right boxes.

To start, you can set it up or take it down in just a matter of minutes (which is helpful for those of us with little patience in putting things together!). Just attach the color-coded grommets to the inner tent and rainfly, and viola!

Weighing in at under three pounds, it’s also one of the lightest tents on the market today. However, it still manages to comfortably sleep two adults and boasts enough space for luggage and other personal belongings.

TUMI Colina Voyager Duffel

The practical and sophisticated TUMI Colina Voyager Duffel is the perfect bag for light travel. It’s roomy enough to fit everything you need for a weekend getaway and even comes with a padded laptop pocket, jewelry compartment and water bottle holder.

But what really makes this bag special is the quality of the materials. Its nylon body is virtually tear-proof, and the handles are the kind of high-end leather that you can expect in a TUMI product.

Plus, the built-in sleeve in the back keeps your bag in place by slipping right over your suitcase handle. Sure, it may be a pricy investment, but you’ll never have to purchase another weekender bag again.

You don’t want to be that traveler at the airport, sweating in your totally irrational clothing choice, shuffling out money for an overpriced neck pillow or new luggage when yours fails, do you? With the best travel clothes on the market and top notch gear, you can rest assured that you’re prepared to travel the world over.
